What is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse Osmosis is the process of removing impurities from water. This is achieved by using pressure to force contaminated water through a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane is a thin film composite (TFC), specially designed so that only hydrogen and oxygen can pass through. By forcing the contaminated water through the membrane (a process called cross-flow filtration) the hydrogen and oxygen passes through forming water on the other side. This water is called permeate and is made available for use. Contaminated water that did not pass through the membrane is called concentrate and is rejected as waste.

Recycling

Some Reverse Osmosis systems allow for recycling of the concentrate, sending the concentrate back through the system. This allows more purified water to be extracted from the concentrate. Recycling can only be done a finite number of times before there's a risk of fouling the membrane and making the Reverse Osmosis system less effective.

Pre-Filter & Pre-Treatment

J&F always advises pre-filters and pre-treatment to be used with a Reverse Osmosis system to remove any particulates, iron, manganese or turbidity from the water before reaching the membrane. Water softeners can also be used to deal with water hardness. This is done due to the delicate nature of the membrane which you do not want to damage or foul up.

Post Treatment

Finally, post-treatment can be added to a Reverse Osmosis system, depending on requirements. This might be to increase the PH level or treatment using a UV Disinfectant lamp.
