Effects of Low pH Water
What does "low pH water" mean?
The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a solution is. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14. The lower the pH number of a water source, the more acidic it is. Adversely, if water has a high pH number, it is more basic; meaning it is high in alkaline.
A pH of 6.8 - 7.2 for water is considered safe for drinking, so this is what you want to aim for.
What are the effects of drinking low pH water?
It does greatly depend on how low the pH level is, however, low pH (acidic) water is filled with other contaminants such as heavy metals. These can result in headaches, stomach cramps and nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea and long-lasting effects such as kidney and liver disease. This is especially true in children due to their developing bodies.
Even if you're not drinking it, a low pH water source can corrode pipes and cause damage to appliances over time, stain laundry and cause blue/green marks on sinks and faucets.
